Cedar planter
508 mm × 508 mm × 603.25 mm
Cut list
| Part | Qty | L × W × T (mm) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leg — nominal 2×2 | 4 | 603.25 × 38.1 × 38.1 | Cut square. Finished footprint is 508 mm square. Panel bottoms sit 127 mm above the feet and tops 25.4 mm below the leg tops. Center each 31.75 mm panel thickness in the 38.1 mm posts, leaving 3.18 mm reveals. Use straight exterior-suitable stock; no load rating is supplied. |
| Panel rail — nominal 1×3 | 8 | 431.8 × 63.5 × 19.05 | Step 1: make four panels, each with two rails. Rail ends butt between the posts; rails face outward. Lower rail bottom is at 127 mm, upper rail top at 577.85 mm. Nail pickets from inside into both rails, two nails per picket per rail; do not glue across the full picket width. Steps 2–3: join panels to posts with two exterior pocket screws at each rail end (32 total). The source drills through the combined picket/rail thickness. Test the jig and screw length on an exact offcut assembly before drilling; offset adjacent-side pockets so screws cannot collide. |
| Vertical cedar picket | 12 | 450.85 × 139.7 × 12.7 | Use 3 pickets per panel. Rip to 139.7 mm if required; leave 3.17 mm gaps between pickets and at both panel ends. Tops/bottoms flush with rail outer edges. Stock is assumed 12.7 mm thick: measure yours before cutting or setting the pocket jig. Cut below dog ears; buy enough usable length plus kerfs, not merely the source shopping quantities. |
| Floor cleat — nominal 1×2 | 2 | 431.8 × 38.1 × 19.05 | Step 4: attach on edge to the inside faces of two opposite picket panels, running front to back, ends aligned with the inner post faces. Cleat top is 406.4 mm above the feet. Predrill three evenly spaced exterior screws per cleat into picket faces; do not overdrive or puncture the outside. Verify actual screw penetration on offcuts. |
| Narrow floor slat — nominal 1×2 | 3 | 431.8 × 38.1 × 19.05 | Step 5: lay five slats across both cleats in narrow / wide / narrow / wide / narrow order. Use 31.75 mm clear gaps between boards and at both ends of the slat field. Floor top is 425.45 mm, 152.4 mm below panel tops. One screw at each slat-to-cleat contact; predrill clear of edges. |
| Wide floor slat — nominal 1×3 | 2 | 431.8 × 63.5 × 19.05 | Alternate with the three narrow slats; all tops flush. Use removable drained nursery pots wide enough to bridge the floor gaps; pots are not rendered. Do not fill the entire shell with soil, block drainage or use it as a seat. Check loaded-pot weight and joint integrity before use; no load capacity is claimed. |
| Exterior pocket screw 63.5 mm | 32 | 63.5 × 4.8 × 4.8 | Source-specified length; quantity is an assembly allowance for sixteen rail-end joints. Select cedar-compatible exterior screws and test combined-stock jig settings, exit location and penetration before assembly. Diameter is nominal. |
| Galvanized panel nail 25.4 mm | 48 | 25.4 × 1.6 × 1.6 | Two per picket at each rail. Shorter than the source's 31.75 mm nail to avoid piercing the modeled 31.75 mm stack. Confirm penetration and holding on actual stock; use cedar-compatible corrosion-resistant fasteners. |
| Exterior wood screw 25.4 mm | 16 | 25.4 × 3.5 × 3.5 | Allowance: six cleat screws and ten floor screws. Shortened from source to avoid piercing the thin pickets at cleats; verify actual stock, head seating and pilot holes. Finish all faces with an exterior cedar-compatible finish and keep feet out of standing water. |

About this plan
A square outdoor planter with four 2×2 legs, four vertical cedar-picket panels framed by 1×3 rails, and five alternating-width floor slats supported on two cleats. The raised floor sits 152.4 mm below the panel tops for removable drained nursery pots; the tall shell is not intended to be filled with soil. This is a beginner-to-intermediate saw-cut build with pocket-hole assembly; allow a weekend plus finish drying time.
Choose a width and matching depth from 400–650 mm and a height from 500–750 mm. The custom-size model recalculates rail lengths, picket count and rip width, floor spacing and cut list together. Stock stays fixed at 38.1 mm square posts, 19.05 mm rails and 12.7 mm thick pickets. Measure actual lumber before machining; the shared configuration link restores your dimensions. No load capacity is claimed.
Questions
- Can I fill the entire planter with soil?
- No. This adaptation uses a shallow raised floor for removable drained pots. Choose pots that bridge the floor gaps, do not block drainage, and check the loaded weight and joints before use. It is not a seat or a load-rated container.
- Why do the cedar pickets need ripping?
- The panel must fit between fixed-size posts while preserving 3.175 mm gaps. The configurator adds pickets as width grows and derives an equal rip width. Fence-picket sizes vary: measure stock and allow for dog ears, kerfs and end trimming.
- Are the source screw and nail lengths unchanged?
- The source's 63.5 mm pocket screws remain, but the combined picket/rail joint needs an exact offcut jig test. Panel nails and ordinary screws are shortened to 25.4 mm to avoid piercing our assumed thin stock. Check penetration, offset corner pockets and use corrosion-resistant fasteners compatible with cedar.
- Can I download CNC files?
- No. This is a straight-cut lumber project. The 3D preview, live cut list and shareable dimensions are available; screw holes, pots and finish are not rendered.
