Cubby shelf

About this plan

A low toy shelf in the Montessori style: an 18 mm plywood carcass with floor-flush sides, top and bottom panels between them, a full-size back screwed over the rear, and full-width shelves that split the height into equal rows. Each row gets its own divider count — the default 3-4-3 grid mixes wide basket cubbies with narrower ones for small toys.

Enter the width, height, and depth plus the rows and columns you want, and the model, panel sizes, screw count, and CNC sheet follow. The configuration link always reproduces exactly what you see.

Questions

How many cubbies can I have?
From 1×1 up to 6 columns by 5 rows. Wide grids suit books and baskets; tall narrow grids suit a hallway. The cut list and CNC sheet rebuild for any combination.
What holds the shelves?
Glued butt joints. The top, bottom, and shelves run between the sides and take two screws through each side; each divider takes a screw through the panel above and below. The back panel, screwed around its perimeter, squares the whole carcass. The live cut list counts every screw for your grid.
Do I need to fix it to the wall?
Yes for any shelf a child can climb. Anchor through the back panel into a stud with two screws — the back is full-size precisely so it carries the anti-tip load.
What plywood should I use?
18 mm Baltic birch or similar void-free plywood; the configurator allows 12–25 mm, and every shelf, divider, and row height is recalculated for the thickness you enter.
Can I cut it on a CNC?
Yes — the download is a real-scale SVG with every panel outline (CUT layer) and non-cutting labels. Hide the LABELS layer before cutting.
